Bellevue Sophomore Gets MHSAA Leadership Nod

Bellevue’s Amanda Smith runs distance, swings a bat, shoots hoops, sprints around a track, scores soccer goals and even kicks around a football. Additionally, she carries a 3.95 grade-point average and is very involved in volunteer efforts around the region.
The sum of these statistics equals a seat on the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) Student Advisory Council (SAC), an honor given to only eight student-athletes around the state each year. Schools are able to nominate one sophomore for consideration each year and, in the words of Marketing Coordinator Andy Frushour, Amanda’s appointment was a “no-brainer”.
Amanda was the only female Class C student-athlete selected. Class C schools have a high school enrollment between 224 and 487. For Bellevue, at 225, this is quite an honor!
In Amanda’s written essay, she mentioned the following: “Extra-curricular activities are an extension to a student’s daily academic work. I believe that being a student is more important than being an athlete, but there are so many things that we are taught in sports (for example, learning discipline, hard work, teamwork, and leadership)… On the committee I plan to bring a diverse student-athlete’s point of view on different subjects and desire to represent the needs of Michigan’s smaller community schools, like Bellevue.”
SAC members are to act as the voice of Michigan’s student-athletes, serve as a student liaison to the MHSAA’s Representative Council, assist in planning Sportsmanship Summits and other student leadership events, help with medal ceremonies at MHSAA championship events, and participate in a yearly focus group about the state of high school sports for Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports.
“It is a joint desire for Amanda to lend her voice to the MHSAA and become a member of the Student Advisory Council,” Bellevue Athletic Director Ryan Portenga exclaims. “I am positive that her service will benefit the council’s other representatives, members of the MHSAA, and student-athletes all around our state.”
Congratulations Amanda!!!!!!!!!!
