On Friday, February 24th, our 6th grade students made the journey over to the JR/SR high school for their first introduction to what the world of junior high will look like next year.  The students spent the afternoon learning about the many differences they will encounter in the 2023/2024 school year. Students were greeted by principal Mr. Mitchell and learned of our fundamental expectations.  Students then had an opportunity to talk with Ms. Redmer and ask questions about classes, schedules and extracurricular activities.  They also took time to chat with our athletic director about the many sports options that are available.  At the end of the afternoon we enjoyed a few debriefing activities and the students found out what it is like to be dismissed from the JR/SR high school at the end of the day. Their behavior was wonderful and our JR/SR high staff is looking forward to having them in the building more often later this spring.  Keep an eye out for an upcoming 6th grade/8th grade switch day! Good evening, School will be closed tomorrow, February 22. The national weather service reports indicate that the weather will be bad right during our dismissal time, and we do not want to risk bringing people to school only for them to leave in dangerous conditions. Be safe. Go Broncos! Dr. Mark

On February 6, 2023 the Bellevue Board of Education approved ballot language for an Operations Millage Renewal. The millage is levied on non-homestead and rental properties and generates roughly $550,000 for the district each year. Operations Millage money goes directly into a district’s General Fund. This means that all the money raised goes to support the students and staff of Bellevue Community Schools. It helps pay for learning supplies, salaries, athletic costs, and transportation. The Operations Millage will be on the ballot on May 2, 2023. Go Broncos! Dr. McGarry mcgarrym@bellevue-schools.com

On February 2ed, Bellevue FFA competed in the District Leadership Contest. They competed against seven other schools including Olivet, CACC, Maple Valley, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, Hastings and Thorn/Kellogg. Kayla Roush competed in public speaking where she had to write and remember a 6-8 minute speech. She did amazing and received a silver placing. She finished 4th overall in her event. Kayla’s speech was about what American Farmers go through to provide the country with food, fiber and shelter. Lucas Harp also competed. He competed in extemporaneous speaking. This is where you get the topic and material at the contest and you have to come up with a 4-6 minute speech in a half hour. His topic was about data in rural areas. Lucas received a gold placing. He was 2ed out of 5 and will be moving on to regionals in two weeks. Congratulations to both students for doing an amazing job and good luck to Lucas at regionals.

Out of 608 students K-12 there have been 9,829 recorded absences in Bellevue Community Schools this school year. These absences might be half a day missed in the morning or afternoon. It might be an hour missed at the secondary level. Some are full days of school. 9,829 is equal to every student having 16 recorded absences. A student is considered chronically absent if out of 180 days of school they miss 18 or more days. We just passed our 100th day of school recently. I have been thinking about these facts all week, and my brain immediately has been jumping to solutions. Well, maybe if we just… do this. That would fix the problem. It took me a moment to take a breath and realize that how to improve attendance is the wrong question. First, we have to understand why. The why is something we can only understand with your help. Go Broncos! Dr. McGarry mcgarrym@bellevue-schools.com
